| What is Cold Process Soap Making? |

| Making soap from scratch is done basically two ways. The cold process method and the hot process method. When using the cold process method I mix oils or fats, either from vegetable or animal fats with distilled water and lye. The lye is necessary for the chemical reaction called "saponifacation" to occur. This literally means "the making of soap". Once this occurs, the lye is no longer in the soap. It has all mixed together and turned into soap and natural glycerin. The natural glycerin is NOT stripped from the soap like it is in commercially made soap bars, therefore you get all the natural moisturizing effects from the glycerin. Soap made from scratch is actually very mild, unlike the old myths that "Grandma's old fashioned lye soap is harsh". This is not! Although, by using the cold process method, my soap needs to cure a minimum of four weeks, sometime longer. The end result is a nice mild product. So the old saying,"Good things come to those that wait" comes into play here. I use food grade ingredients, so you can be sure you are getting the mildest soap I can make! I check all pH levels, to be sure it is not harsh. Nothing will leave my home unless it is a top quality product! |
